I Love My Community: Sara Somera

By  0 Comments

Sara Somera, a yoga and fitness instructor and native of Stockton, sat down with HERLIFE Magazine to discuss her commitment to family and community.

HLM: How long have you lived in San Joaquin County and what do you love most about it?
SS: I’ve lived in Stockton most of my life, with time spent in England, Barcelona and San Diego, but Stockton remains my hometown, rich in memories and lifelong friendships that date back to kindergarten and elementary school. San Joaquin County is highly diversified with strong community support.

HLM: You are a yoga instructor. Tell us how you started teaching, about the health benefits of yoga and how people find you to take classes.
SS: I got hooked on yoga after my girlfriend took me to a class in 2003 in Hermosa Beach. After practicing yoga as a student for a year, I then decided to become an instructor in 2004. Yoga offers a range of health benefits including improving flexibility, strength, balance, stress reduction, better sleep, pain relief (particularly for back pain), increasing body awareness, essentially promoting both physical and mental well-being through controlled movement and deep breathing. Recently I’ve had requests for private yoga for bridal parties in March 2025; I’m also available for private yoga sessions for birthday and bridal parties, quinceañeras and men’s and women’s get-togethers for all occasions. You can find me on Instagram at yoga_by_sara.

HLM: What is a key event that had an impact on your life?
SS: Taking a few yoga classes in San Diego had a profound impact on my life, inspiring me to pursue a full-time career as a yoga and
fitness instructor.

HLM: Where is your heart inspired to serve the community?
SS: The youth in our community inspire me to give back through yoga, supporting their football programs in high school, middle school and elementary school. Yoga has been incorporated into the
conditioning program.

HLM: What sparks joy in your life?
SS: Witnessing my students’ growth and progress on their yoga journey is incredibly rewarding.

HLM: Outside of work, what do you like to engage in.
SS: Nothing like the World Series in the Bronx! Next time, Yankees.

HLM: What are your top three bucket list items?
SS: Rooftop Ice Rink in San Francisco; take a class next to Tracy Anderson, New York; learn a third language.

HLM: What is an accomplishment you are most proud of?
SS: Practicing yoga with children who have special needs.

HLM: Your favorite quote?
SS: It’s never too late to start.

HLM: What is your favorite food/dessert?
SS: Seafood and a good port after dinner.
