Joe Hassan’s Western & Workwear: Family-Owned Business Expands!
Alongtime Lodi outfitter has rolled into Stockton and is setting up its second location in Lincoln Center. Whether you are dressing for work on the construction crew or looking for the perfect fit for the ranch, Joe Hassan’s Western & Workwear has the boots, shirts, pants, hats and gear for the occasion. The family-owned business hopes to open its Lincoln Center store in mid-June.
Nick Hassan, who will be managing the new store, said the move is a natural fit for expanding the business that was started in 1947 by his grandfather. The original Joe Hassan, a generous, humble and hardworking man, turned a family member’s existing dry goods store into a clothing store to supply farmworkers and tradespeople. That first store is still thriving in its modest brick space at 100 N. Sacramento Street in downtown Lodi.
Large Inventory
The new store, with its big bright sign, will feature workwear for both men and women as well as Western wear. “We have a big following in Stockton who shop at our Lodi store,” Kamal Hassan, who co-manages the business with Nick, said. “But Stockton is a big market and there isn’t a store selling our unique inventory that is family owned. We have our own niche.”
Construction workers can outfit themselves with all sorts of work boots and even helmets; road crews can find reflective clothing. Those who work on farms and ranches will discover durable brands, and Joe Hassan’s carries the mandatory nonskid shoes that restaurant workers need. The store carries brands such as Keen Utility, Timberland Pro Series, Thorogood, Carhartt, Irish Setter shoes and more. There are Western boots, buckles, hats and shirts from brands such as Pendleton, Ariat and Wrangler. They will also carry The North Face, Ben Davis, Resistol and others. Joe Hassan’s even carries a wide selection of sunglasses from Oakley, Ray-Ban and Maui Jim, to name a few.
New Space
The new store is a welcome addition at Lincoln Center, which will boast a full occupancy of 94 tenants when Jersey Mike’s Subs, with plans to occupy the space next to Village Barber, opens. “We were able to downsize one of our existing tenants, McCaulou’s, to provide space for Joe Hassan’s. We believe both of these businesses will complement each other moving forward,” said Hobie Day, property manager for Sims-Grupe Management, which owns and manages Lincoln Center and other properties in San Joaquin County. “Haggerty Construction started the remodel at the end of September and completed their work at the end of February. We delivered the space to Joe Hassan’s empty so they can add their own fixtures and displays. They should be open for business in June.”
Hobie said Joe Hassan’s will provide another retail option for customers in Lincoln Center that has not been offered. Hobie added that a lot of farmers and contractors visit the center. “We are happy to bring another local retailer that has been serving our community since 1947 to Lincoln Center,” Hobie said.
On a recent day in May, Kamal was surrounded with the parts and pieces to set up displays and racks for the boxes of product that will be arriving. In between time spent setting up shop, he has been getting to know the neighbors. “Lincoln Center has been so welcoming,” Kamal said, as work continued on the interior of the new store, located between McCaulou’s Department Store and La Mesa Mexican Kitchen. “We’re very happy to be here. Everything has been excellent. We’ve been eating out at the restaurants and getting to know the other tenants.”
Business Continuation
Joe Hassan would likely be very proud of his family’s expansion into Stockton to serve their loyal customers. “He had great respect for hardworking people,” Kamal said of Joe Hassan. “We have always been a supplier to the good old American worker and the farmer.” Joe Hassan, who sadly passed away February 8, 2021, worked every day until two days before his death.
Today, Joe Hassan’s loyal customers are still looking for rugged durability at a good value. “We are proud to serve Stockton and the surrounding areas from both locations,” Kamal said. “We are looking forward to meeting the needs of new customers, too.”
Kamal, who will manage the Lincoln Center store, said the new space is about 12,000 square feet, including 7,500 square feet of display space. He plans on employing about a half dozen staff and plans to be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday; Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. except for 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., when it will be closed; and it will be open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.
