Michelle & Michael Weltz

Tied the Knot October 19, 2019

Michelle Weltz, 39, a secondary English teacher in Spring Hill, received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education English/journalism from Kansas State University with a minor in leadership studies, and her master’s in educational theory and practice from Arkansas State University. She loves books, concerts, wine, football, tacos and their Yorkie, Tiki.

Michael Weltz, 43, received his bachelor’s degree in general studies with an emphasis in psychology from Wichita State University and is a preload supervisor for UPS. He loves the Kansas City Chiefs, loud music, tacos and little dogs.

“We had met through mutual friends twice before; I was not impressed and he didn’t remember meeting me,” Michelle laughs. “The third time, we met on my birthday at The Peanut and he swears it was love at first sight. I was more skeptical but agreed to hang out to watch the KC Chiefs game the next day. He actually paused the game for me for over two hours while he waited for me to finally arrive. We ended up talking for hours afterwards.”

Michael made false promises to lure Michelle to his proposal setting. “He had planned a girls’ day out for me with my friends at Stone Pillar Winery in April 2018,” she relates. “From there, my friends, who were in on the surprise, took me to the Overland Park Arboretum under the guise of another wine tasting where Mike had our family and friends waiting near the Standing Couple statue. It was so cold it actually snowed that day, and as snowflakes fell, he proposed.”

The blissful couple tied the knot October 19, 2019. Serving as Maid of Honor was Angela Maynes; Matron of Honor was Jolene Rutledge. Bridesmaids were Judith Shuey, Becca Jones, Mycal Abel and Stephanie Hojnacki. Ryan Weltz served as Best Man; groomsmen were Justin Tims, Michael Maloney, Nate Rutledge, Brent Sierks, Brian Williamson and Adam Stuhr. Flower girls were Charlotte Weltz and Quincy Poplin; ring bearers were Xavier Maynes and Michael Weltz. Andre Free, Carter Poplin, Bennet Poplin and Graham Poplin served as ushers.

The wedding day dawned sunny, with 70-degree weather. “We had a few fun personal touches throughout the wedding and the reception,” Michelle shares. “Wine is something we both love, and we wanted to add small touches to reflect that. Our guest book was four different wine bottles for the guests to write us messages for anniversaries one, three, five and ten. We wrote one another letters and sealed them with a bottle of wine in a personalized wine box to be opened on a future anniversary. We also knew that since our venue was quite a distance outside of the Kansas City area, our guests would need a safe ride home. I’m a teacher and knew I could rent a school bus to transport our guests to and from the wedding safely. It helped us feel good about our guests having a good time and getting home safely.”
