This authentic Italian bakery has been delighting the neighborhood with baked goods since its founding in 1918. With over a century of rich history, the bakery has not only maintained its commitment to quality but also fostered a sense of belonging that has made it a beloved landmark. Founded by Angelo Rolleri, Genova Bakery has become a cornerstone of the community, celebrated for its commitment to quality and tradition.

The story of Genova Bakery begins with Angelo Rolleri, an Italian immigrant from Genoa, Italy. Rolleri’s commitment to his customers set the bakery up to last for a lifetime. During tough times, he extended a helping hand to local farmers, allowing them to pay for bread the next year when their crops came in. He created an inviting atmosphere on Saturdays by offering customers gathered at the store fresh French and Italian bread, cheese, salami and red wine. In 1971, after 53 years of operation, Stockton’s City Planning Commission presented Angelo Rolleri with an Award of Excellence for his community service.

As Stockton evolved, so did Genova Bakery, though it always stayed true to its roots. In its early years, deliveries were made by horse and wagon, with a laughable story about a horse returning home at the sound of a factory’s noon whistle, leaving the delivery man stranded. While home deliveries ceased in 1983, the bakery continued to adapt to modern demands while preserving its old-world charm.

Leadership of the bakery has also passed through generations. In 1981, Bart Bona, John G. Rolleri and John A. Rolleri took over, ensuring the bakery’s legacy endured. When Tim Canevari, a former high school employee of the bakery, became the fifth owner in 2004, he stayed true to the service that keeps the customers returning. Canevari is committed to putting the customers first, just like Rolleri, setting reasonable prices and preserving the original recipes.

Today, Genova Bakery continues to serve loyal customers, some of whom have been visiting for decades. The bakery’s deli remains a popular lunch destination, where customers can enjoy a variety of Italian staples and renowned sandwiches. Generations of families frequent the bakery, creating a sense of continuity and shared history. The bakery’s cookies, Italian lollies and notorious bread are everlasting favorites among visitors young and old.

Located at 749 N. Sierra Nevada Street in what was once a vibrant Italian neighborhood, Genova Bakery stands as a testament to Stockton’s cultural richness. It offers more than just baked goods; it provides a welcoming environment where tradition and warm company intertwine. As Genova Bakery celebrates over 100 years of history, it remains a beacon of authentic Italian flavors and timeless values.
