Celebrating Connie Fox: 96 Years Young and 25 Years of Giving Back

This year, we proudly celebrate Connie Fox, our oldest active volunteer, as she turns 96 years young.

Connie began volunteering with Hospice of San Joaquin in 2001, after our hospice cared for her husband. She was invited by Julie Lofy, the volunteer manager at the time, to volunteer and was inspired by the compassionate care her husband, Don, received, especially from his nurse, Kristi Lobb. Connie chuckles and fondly remembers that on the days Kristi visited, Don insisted on combing his own hair so he would look presentable for her.

What began as a way to simply give back has become more than 25 years of dedicated service. Over the years, Connie has volunteered in the office, represented and promoted our organization at community outreach events, supported special events and assisted with bereavement services.

When asked why she continues to volunteer, Connie’s answer is simple. “The satisfaction. I’ve loved every minute of it.” She greatly treasures the relationships she’s built with staff, many of whom keep in touch with her long after moving on from the organization. “We are family. I love Hospice of San Joaquin,” she said. The feeling is mutual.

Connie’s daughter, Diana Costa, learned the value of volunteering by watching her mother and she now celebrates 11 years of service and more than 3,500 volunteer hours with Hospice of San Joaquin. “It’s great to help others. Ask how you can help. Be open to help with different tasks and in different areas,” Connie said of her advice to anyone considering volunteering.

At 96, Connie continues to embrace life with enthusiasm. She creates beautiful gem artwork that takes two weeks at a time to complete and she makes uplifting pocket crosses to encourage others spiritually. She firmly believes that staying involved and positive is the key to a fulfilling life.

“Keep your hobbies. Stay busy and don’t feel sorry for yourself. Be positive and grateful. Stay in touch with your friends and family,” Connie said. She practices what she preaches. Connie still has lunch with her schoolmates; one is from the first grade, two from grammar school and the rest are from high school.

Connie reminds us that you can make a difference at any age. By serving others and teaching our children the importance of giving back, we create stronger, more compassionate communities. Her life is a beautiful example that kindness, purpose and service never grow old.
