Whimsy Meets Sophistication: A Forest-Inspired Bathroom Retreat

By  0 Comments

Some design stories begin with architectural plans, others with fabric swatches or mood boards. This one began with a hummingbird mirror.

Delicate and colorful, the mirror featured a floral motif with a hummingbird mid-flight. It was charming, sweet and entirely too literal. But it also revealed something deeper about what the homeowners really wanted, a guest bathroom that felt immersive, expressive and full of personality. They envisioned a nature-inspired retreat that was at the same time lush and layered, but grown-up. Whimsical, yes. But also refined.

At KTJ Design Co., we specialize in helping clients create spaces that reflect new chapters in their lives. This guest bathroom became a canvas for transformation, one that balanced fantasy and function, sophistication and storytelling.

The Design Challenge
The brief was twofold: rework the awkward layout to increase usability and express a forest theme in a way that felt artistic and elevated. The existing space was cramped, with a poorly placed sink and no room for a vanity. While the idea of nature played heavily into the initial inspiration, it needed to be interpreted with restraint and elegance. We also needed to add a dedicated makeup vanity (a special request) but didn’t have the luxury of expanding the room.

A Smarter Floor Plan
The first breakthrough came from beyond the bathroom itself. By reclaiming space from an adjacent coat closet, we were able to carve out a tucked-away vanity nook that feels like its own private moment within the room. We also relocated the sink to the opposite wall to create better flow and symmetry.

This reimagined layout gave us the freedom to make the bathroom feel open, purposeful and visually balanced, all without expanding the footprint.

Nature, Elevated
With the layout resolved, it was time to bring the design theme to life. We leaned into a palette inspired by the forest at golden hour, with mossy greens, warm terracotta, soft blacks and brushed gold. These tones, paired with layered materials and thoughtful texture, allowed the theme to emerge subtly and luxuriously.

The marble mosaic tile floor became the anchor, adding timeless beauty and a sense of calm. Custom cabinetry in a muted green offered quiet contrast and warmth.
For the centerpiece, we created a stunning tiled mural above the bathtub. Rich in color and organic movement, it evokes tropical foliage without falling into cliché. The mural instantly sets the tone. It is a bold focal point that commands attention while feeling entirely at home in the space.

A terracotta-colored wallpaper with a barely-there botanical pattern adds depth to the vanity area and complements the mural without competing with it. The resulting palette is earthy, inviting and quietly dramatic.

The Power of Lighting
Lighting played a critical role in making the space feel indulgent. Sculptural fixtures in a brushed gold and black finish add glow and sophistication. At the vanity, soft lighting enhances the area’s function and mood, making the space feel more like a boutique hotel than a typical guest bath.

Details like these turn a bathroom into an experience. The details linger with guests long after they’ve stepped out.

A Mirror’s Legacy
Although the original hummingbird mirror didn’t make it into the final design, its spirit absolutely did. The idea of nature, movement and softness became the foundation of the room’s story. The mirror itself found a new home elsewhere, and what remained was a space that honored the whimsy of the original idea while elevating it into something lasting and refined.

This bathroom became more than just a remodel; it became a transformation. And that transformation didn’t go unnoticed.

Award-Winning Design
This project was honored with an NKBA Design Award, a prestigious recognition given by the National Kitchen & Bath Association to showcase outstanding work in creativity, functionality and innovation. Judged by industry experts, the award celebrates projects that raise the bar and this bathroom did just that. It was selected for its inventive use of space, bold material choices and the successful balance of story and sophistication.

Earning this recognition affirms what thoughtful design can achieve when imagination and intention work hand in hand.

A Space That Surprises and Delights
At KTJ Design Co., we believe that great design is never just about finishes or fixtures. It’s about how a space makes you feel. This guest bathroom was designed to delight, to surprise and to offer a little moment of escape.

It’s a room that tells a story with every tile and texture. A place where a closet became a feature. Where a whimsical idea evolved into something award-worthy.
Design like this invites more than compliments; it invites connection. Because when you walk into a space that feels truly considered, you can’t help but pause, breathe and feel at home.
