Dr. Levi Young: Practicing the Art of Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Young recently returned from a trip to Africa as part of his backing for the Medical Missions Foundation. While he’s supported the nonprofit for several years through donations and silent auction artwork, this was his first medical mission trip. During his week in the country of Uganda, he and the other volunteers performed more than two dozen surgeries, most of them on children. The teams repaired and restored function to contracted neck scars, eyelids scarred open and multiple arm and leg contractures that prevented the use of those extremities. Many small children could not use their hands due to scar contractions.

Compassionate Hands
“The most significant cases were a young girl whose burns to her face had disfigured her left eye, mouth and neck. She could not close that one eye or fully move her neck due to her injuries,” noted Dr. Young. “A similar case in an adult woman who had seized and fallen face-first into a fire (and) had open burns to her scalp down to the skull as well as eyelid scarring, which prevented the eye from closing. In both cases, I was able to close the wounds, release the eyelids and place skin grafts, restoring the eyelid closure and dramatically improving the disfigurement. There was such a fulfillment to be able to serve these wonderful people in such a life-changing way.”
