Just Sayin’

Maybe it’s because I’m the daughter of a police officer; I don’t know. But for some reason I am completely obsessed with true crime. Books, documentaries, podcasts, YouTube videos, you name it; I’m all over it.

I know I’m not alone! I belong to several “true crime” Facebook groups in which thousands of others chime in about case after case. Netflix clearly knows me because every suggested show involves the words “forensic” or “murder.” I’m just fascinated by all of it.

I think the psychology of it all is what really intrigues me,. especially the cases in which a seemingly normal person snaps and commits an atrocious act. I just can’t wrap my brain around these criminals and their crimes. DNA testing is extra-interesting to me, and how it has freed so many inmates (some on Death Row!) because it proved their innocence. Or just how anyone would willingly commit a crime knowing they could end up behind bars. The thought is terrifying. Who would ever risk a trip to jail? Not this girl!

Anyway, if you get it and you too are a crime junkie, I thought I’d share some of my recent favorites!

Podcast
Confronting: O. J. Simpson with Kim Goldman. Twenty-five years after Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered, Kim Goldman speaks out. She interviews prosecutor Marcia Clark, investigators, members of the jury and witnesses. Incredibly compelling!

Book
The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row by Anthony Ray Hinton. This is the true story of a man who spent nearly 30 years on Death Row for a crime he didn’t commit. I could not put it down. It was an Oprah’s Book Club pick.

Netflix
The Fear of 13. It’s a documentary that tells the story of a man who spent 21 years on Death Row but was released when DNA evidence proved he was innocent of the crime. Riveting!

I have lots more to share if you’re interested! Shoot me an email and share your favorites as well. And hey, if this radio thing doesn’t pan out, look for me at the police station. I’ll be administering polygraph tests!
