Lisa and John Frey

Higher education was the key to the love shared between Lisa and John Frey. “We met at a basement house party at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,” they explain.

Lisa Frey, 31, earned her BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and MBA from Rockhurst University. She and John moved to Kansas City from Wisconsin in 2014 when he selected KCU Medical School as his next professional step. “We moved into a loft downtown and fell in love with the city instantly,” she smiles. “When we got engaged it was important to us to celebrate our big day in the city we had grown to love.”

John Frey, 31, received his BS and MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his DO from Kansas City University of Medicine.

After settling in and enjoying everything wonderful about their new city, it was time for John’s proposal. “We went for a hike in the state park just outside of Weston, Missouri,” Lisa shares. “John’s dad had selected his mother’s ring from a small family jewelry store in New York City, and John wanted my ring to come from the same place. He secretly flew to New York one weekend while I was traveling and met his parents to select my ring. We flew home and narrowly missed each other in the airport as he raced to beat me home to avoid my suspicion. A few weeks later we went hiking in the park and he popped the question. I was so surprised that my reaction was ‘No, no way. No way! No way, no way, no way!’ I didn’t pull it together until John started laughing and told me that I had to say yes.”

The blissful couple tied the knot October 27, 2018. The wedding party included seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen. Some were family; others were from high school, college, first jobs and beyond. One groomsman served as the officiant, two of John’s cousin’s daughters served as flower girls, and Lisa’s cousin’s son served as ring security.

“On our wedding day, we took special care to celebrate not only our love but the love that our family had shared with us along the way,” Lisa relates. “My dad built the arch we were married under; our cake was cut with my parent’s cake utensils; my bouquet was wrapped in my great grandmother’s handkerchief, and our cookie table featured our favorite recipes from our mothers and grandmothers. Each cookie was served on their original serving tray and accompanied by their wedding photo. It was a special way to celebrate all the love that came before our big day.

“That special day featured the city of KC; we stayed in Crown Center, took our photos at the World War I Memorial, got married in the Crossroads and enjoyed our after-party at a KC staple, the Green Lady Lounge.”

Lisa and John honeymooned in Jamaica, where they enjoyed a relaxing getaway on the beach.
