YOUnited in the Fight Against Breast Cancer!

By  0 Comments

One in eight women and one in 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year. In fact, 5,530 women in Missouri will hear the words, “You have breast cancer” in 2019 alone, along with 2,420 women in Kansas. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women.

To change these startling statistics, the American Cancer Society began Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in 1993 as a rallying cry to build awareness and generate funds to help end the disease. Since then, more than 15 million Making Strides supporters have raised more than $935 million nationwide. Last year, 10,000 walkers in Kansas City helped to raise more than $260,000.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

Breast cancer survivor and 2019 Making Strides Portrait of Hope Jolene Moore feels strongly about where her money goes. “Thoughts of getting involved with a good cause while I was building my strength back up kept me going. I had known I wanted to get involved in a breast cancer walk. I researched all the other cancer walks I could find because it was always very important to my mom and to me that when we donate our money and time to an organization, we do it with an organization we would want to truly be a part of,” said Moore. “I came across some information on cancer.org about the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Kansas City, and after doing some more research I knew I had found the walk to participate in. I wanted to become not just a person who walks in it but instead felt it was a walk I could be a part of, celebrating. I love the fact the walk is all inclusive, whether you can donate $1,000 or one dollar, you are welcome to be on a team, walk and give your support.”

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Kansas City walk is a noncompetitive three-mile walk. Participants walk in teams or individually and invite their friends and families to join their team and donate to their effort. The event is free for anyone who wants to come out and join in the celebration that day.

We will unite the community with a shared determination to help save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without breast cancer. Join us on October 26 at Crown Center!
