Tie the Knot: Maggie & Scott Kalman

By  0 Comments

Maggie Padek Kalman, 27, grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. She received a BA in history from Tulane University and completed her masters of social work and masters of public health from Washington University in St. Louis. Maggie is a project coordinator at the Prevention Research Center St. Louis at Washington University in St. Louis.

Scott Kalman, 29, grew up in Woodbridge, Connecticut. He received a BS in business administration from American University and completed his JD at Loyola University in New Orleans. He is currently a solo practitioner in the St. Louis area and works in the areas of family, criminal and traffic law. Maggie and Scott live in St. Louis, Missouri.

One cool night in New Orleans, January 31, 2009, Maggie and some friends went to a local campus bar, Bruno’s. Scott and his buddy Pat decided to frequent Bruno’s that evening as well. Maggie, Anne and Meredith entered the bar and spotted a table with no chairs so Maggie approached Scott and Pat’s table to borrow an empty chair. Gentlemanly Scott agreed and later offered to buy Maggie a drink, eventually asking for her phone number. The next day, he called Maggie to make plans to go on a real date that Saturday night and they have been together ever since.

On January 31, 2013, Scott and Maggie were planning to celebrate their fourth anniversary. Maggie knew that Scott had purchased a ring over the holidays; however, Scott kept telling her it wouldn’t be until late spring when he got the ring so she didn’t think they would be getting engaged soon. “We had a nice anniversary dinner at La Brasserie in St. Louis,” Maggie reminisces. “When we got back to the apartment after dinner, I walked in to find the dining room table covered in flower petals with a poem in the middle. Scott had a friend of his come into the apartment while they were at dinner to set everything up. As I read the poem, I wasn’t quite sure what was going on and was half-laughing, half-crying until I turned around and found Scott down on one knee. Of course, my response was ‘Yes!’”

The blissful couple tied the knot on October 18, 2014. Maggie’s cousin, Marysa Monterubio, served as Maid of Honor; childhood friend Samantha Armistead was Matron of Honor. Bridesmaids were Jamie Henry, Niki Kocourek and Anne Smazal. Scott’s Best Men were childhood friend Brad Lindemann and college friend Zachary Ritter; groomsmen were Jameson Freeman, Brendan Kowanacki and Derek Brower.

A special pre-wedding event was the brunch Maggie hosted for her mom, future mother-in-law, bridesmaids and her mom’s friends. “We ordered bulk flowers and got together to create our bouquets and boutonnieres. Since the venue is so ornate and we were doing a lot with candles, we didn’t need a lot of flowers to decorate with. The flowers that were left were used throughout Loose Mansion for special additional touches.”

“Our wedding day went beautifully,” Maggie relates. “It was a relaxing day for both Scott and me; we were able to spend time with our close friends and family. When I walked in with my dad during the ceremony, my breath was taken away by how beautiful and full the room was. Seeing all my friends and family standing there with candlelight in the background just made it perfect. We chose “In My Life” by the Beatles for our family and wedding party processional, and Scott said it was like watching a replay of his life seeing his parents and his closest friends all walking down the aisle toward him. And the reception was a whirlwind, but we all had a wonderful time.”

Maggie and Scott spent a wonderful, relaxing honeymoon in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
