Mariah and Darren Boersma

Tied the Knot: March 23, 2019

Mariah (Alger) Boersma, 23, went to Ripon Christian Schools, K-12 and continued her education with two years of college at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Due to some health concerns, she came home from Dordt after those two years and is now working as a bridal consultant.

Darren Boersma, 24, attended Ripon Christian Schools, K-12 and continued his education at California State University, Fresno, majoring in ag business. He now works as an almond farmer for their family farm in Manteca. Darren and Marian live in Escalon with their two golden retrievers.

“Our parents have known each other since they were in high school and college, so our families have always been friends,” Mariah shares. “Yet we didn’t become friends until high school at Ripon Christian. We both played on the tennis team together, but we didn’t date. It wasn’t until we both came home from college that our friendship turned into something more. The summer we both returned home, we were in a wedding together; we hit it off and started to date.”

Darren’s proposal hit its mark in June 2018. “Darren said his dad had left the targets out and did I want to go shoot targets at their house,” Mariah relates. “He grabbed the Go-Pro camera with the excuse that he needed to make sure the video worked for the next day, even though they never use it at work. We drove to the orchard and got our guns ready to shoot; I told Darren he could go first, like always. He had planned for this. He shot only the first target, then asked me if I wanted to shoot the rest. Usually, you finish shooting the course, so I was a little confused, but I just went with it. As I shot each target, it swung around and revealed the sentence ‘Will you marry me?’ I didn’t notice the words until I was completely done because I was so focused on hitting the targets! Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. But before he put the ring on my finger, he took the gun out of my hand! Safety first!”

The blissful couple tied the knot March 23, 2019, with a wedding party of ten bridesmaids and ten groomsmen, nieces as flower girls and cousins as ring bearers. “We had special touches that included all our family,” Mariah shares. “We took photos with our golden retriever, Ruger, and the entire bridal party stayed at the Purple Orchid, so it was fun being together the whole wedding weekend. We had a generation table, showing all the generations of marriages in our families. My older twin sisters put together a rap for their toast that was hilarious. Plus, we had all four sets of grandparents there on our wedding day.”

Mariah and Darren honeymooned at the Sandals Royal Bahamian, basking in sunshine, blue water and all the luxuries of a Sandals resort.
