Marissa Mendoza and Michael Figone: Partners in Mendoza & Figone

In 2018, this power couple opened their own firm. Marissa began her practice in 2016 prior to the partnership. “Our firm specializes in personal injury, including motor vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, wrongful death, slip and falls and dog bites,” she explained. “We also specialize in landlord/tenant law, including unlawful detainers.”

Her true passion and expertise are in the field of personal injury, specifically motor vehicle accidents. This area of practice allows her to use her undergraduate degree in biological sciences toward interpreting medical records and gaining a better understanding of what her clients endure as a result of injuries sustained from accidents.

Preparation for Practice
“I attended Dominican University of California for undergraduate school. I graduated with a degree in biological sciences and a minor in chemistry. I then attended University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law and I graduated with a Juris Doctor degree,” she continued. “My undergraduate education was primarily focused on pre-medicine, so I learned a lot about medical research, medical terminology and about the physiology of the human body. I often apply these skills to effectively communicate the diagnosis and prognosis of my clients’ injuries.”

Born in the city of Stockton, California, she was raised in Manteca, California, where she met her husband and now law partner, Michael Figone. They moved to Lodi, California, in 2012 and have been residents since.

Michael was born and raised in Manteca, California, where he and Marissa both attended Sierra High School. The two met during their sophomore year and have been together since. Michael also attended Dominican University of California in San Rafael and University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Michael began his legal career as a law clerk for Fluetsch & Fluetsch in Lodi, California. Mr. Fluetsch was an exceptional mentor who taught Michael the value of detailed and thorough work as well as zealous representation of clients.

Realizing Her Dream
She discussed what she has overcome as she started her own business. “I encountered many challenges while starting my own business that have proven humbling. I began working from a home office and borrowed a space from the Fluetschs while building my practice,” she noted. “This allowed me to save for my dream of opening an office of my own. In 2018, I was able to open my office on the Miracle Mile in Stockton. Managing a business and practicing law has been one of the most challenging endeavors for me, but I have taken every part of it in stride and have learned more than expected along the way. I have gained so much respect for small business owners of our community as a result of experiencing how much effort and planning go into managing a small business.”

Advice of an Attorney
“I understand that retaining an attorney to handle personal injury matters can be nerve-racking at times, but it is important that parties know their rights and retain attorneys who can better serve to protect their interests,” she continued. “I often find that clients shy away from retaining counsel early on in their personal injury claims process because they feel it may be easier and more cost-effective to go without; however, more often than not, individuals and families settle their claims without understanding how the process works and without properly conveying the effect that personal injuries have on the individual as well as his or her family to insurance companies.” Their firm prides itself in its ability to maintain wonderful and transparent relationships with clients. They make themselves available at all times to answer questions and meet with clients personally to ensure they are receiving the best representation possible and feel communication is key to successful resolution.

Marissa enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. She and Michael visited Europe for the first time during their honeymoon last summer and gained a new zest for traveling. They hope to visit as many new places as possible during the next few years and have their eye on Greece as their next destination.

Along the way, she has learned that giving up is not an option, and that persistence and dedication lead to success in anything one does. She admits this journey has not been easy and is definitely not for the faint of heart, but when she gets a token of gratitude from clients and is able to achieve a successful result in her cases, it all becomes worth it and allows her to look forward to the wonderful journey ahead.

“In a field that’s full of adversity, honesty and kindness that have a profoundly positive and successful effect are always appreciated,” she reiterated.
