Steven F. Brizendine, DDS, MS: Achieving the Smile You’ve Always Wanted

Our teeth and our smile are an important part of our appearance, self-esteem and overall health. As adults we already know the importance of dental hygiene and are in charge of passing those healthy habits of smile-care on to our children.

But many parents of youngsters who are showing early signs of needing dental intervention in the way of braces are under the misconception that nothing can be done to correct their child’s dental issues, such as potential crowding, open bite and overbite, until their teenage years. But thanks to continued advances in dentistry, along with the talent and commitment of one Lodi area dentist, parents are able to be proactive when it comes to their child’s early interceptive orthodontic treatment.

Education and Experience
A Modesto, California, native, Steven F. Brizendine, DDS, MS, graduated from Andrews University High School of Michigan and then from Pacific Union College, achieving a BS degree in behavioral science. He then earned his Doctor of Dental Science degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and was accepted into Loma Linda’s orthodontic residency program straight out of dental school. After receiving his Master of Science degree in orthodontics, he served his country with the United States Air Force. A proud Lodian, he and his wife, Kelly, have two grown children, Erica and Jillian, and he is a proud grandpa to Jack, Ty, Wyatt and Gianna.
“We treat all ages, and there are many age-appropriate options available at our Lodi, Galt and Sutter Creek locations,” shared Kelly Brizendine, office manager and wife of Dr. Brizendine. “We offer many options in interceptive orthodontic treatment, from traditional braces to the Invisalign® option. Invisalign is the clear way to straighten teeth without braces, using aligners that are an effective style of aligners. This option really appeals to our adult patients, but they do require some discipline since they can be taken in and out. Our younger patients are typically prescribed traditional braces, but we do offer the Invisalign® Teen that utilizes a system of clear aligners and is also an alternative to traditional braces for older kids. Dr. Brizendine works very hard to educate all of his patients about the importance of early intervention when it comes to dental issues, especially young children.”
Proactive Orthodontia for Children

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child receives his or her first orthodontic screening by age seven. By starting treatment early, parents and dental practioners are able to recognize potential problems and correct them before they become more serious. This not only saves parents and children time and money, it works to prevent future problems before they begin. These healthy interventions are known as “phases.”

“There seems to be some confusion on first and second-phase orthodontics,” Dr. Brizendine noted. “When properly used, first phases can shorten second-phase treatments and can be used to develop the arches to accommodate tooth size so permanent tooth extractions can be avoided. It can correct cross-bites that would be more difficult to correct at a later age and it can use growth to help difficult bite problems. First-phase orthodontics can maintain space for the early loss of baby teeth and avoid letting permanent teeth drift into other teeth’s eruption space. I use early treatment if it will enhance and help the end results. I prefer to treat in one step if possible to achieve the desired results, but first-phase interventions are sometimes necessary. The cost of two phases is sometimes a little more, but if we get the results we want, it’s well worth it. I want the best results for my patients and will offer the best treatment options for each case.”

Wanted: a Beautiful Smile
“The comfort and convenience of our patients are always a priority. Dr. Brizendine is very conscious about not making his patients wait and he works very hard to stay on schedule every day,” Kelly concluded. “Everyone at this dental practice is fully committed to ensuring that every patient achieves a healthy and beautiful smile all day, every day, no matter what their age is. We want Central Valley residents to know that it’s never too late to achieve the smile they have always wanted.” HLM

What’s Best for the Patient

Dr. Brizendine and his team are very committed to offering time-saving options to their patients, such as an in-house lab that increases turnaround times on custom braces and reduces the wait time on repairs.

“Our main goal is to provide the highest quality orthodontic care in a family-based, high-technology practice,” Kelly Brizendine noted. “Our practice is continually working to offer only the best patient experience possible, and that includes staying on top of the latest dental innovations and treatments.

“Our sterilization process is top of the line and we utilize the most advanced equipment available, including digital photography and advanced computer graphics. This also includes our 3D Imaging Scanner that scans our patient’s skull so we can see where problem teeth are and if there are impacted teeth.”
